The First Warning

Lt. Leon Katipana noticed the first alert appear on his tactical display.
Then another.
Then six more.
The warning symbols spread across the screen as the base’s integrated early-warning network began correlating incoming data. Katipana stared at the display for several seconds before his training took over.
“Verify.”
The computer began cross-checking the returns against every available sensor.
Long-range radar.
Bistatic radar.
Space-based tracking.
Infrared satellites.
Passive electronic sensors.
Underwater acoustic arrays.
The results came back almost immediately.
TRACK CONFIRMED.
Katipana’s stomach tightened.
“Run it again.”
The system ran the calculations a second time.
The result did not change.
MULTIPLE HIGH-VELOCITY TRAJECTORIES.
ORIGIN: UNKNOWN.
IMPACT PROBABILITY: CALCULATING.
Katipana pushed his chair back.
“Send it to the main board. Priority flash.”
He immediately opened another channel.
“Lieutenant Gu Chun, this is Katipana. I have multiple ballistic contacts.”
There was a moment of silence.
“How many?”
“Still counting.”
Gu Chun’s voice became sharper.
“Send me everything.”
“Already transmitting.”
The two officers worked independently and then together, comparing radar returns, tracking solutions and satellite data. Within minutes, the information was moving upward through the command structure.
At the center of the base, Brigadier General Aquila Darensi watched the main tactical display fill with red lines.
One of his staff officers approached.
“General, the computer has reached ninety-five percent confidence.”
Darensi looked at the trajectories.
“Origin?”
“Multiple launch points.”
“Missile type?”
“Unknown.”
“Aircraft?”
“No.”
“Ground launch?”
“Trajectory doesn’t support it.”
Darensi studied the display.
“Then what are we looking at?”
The answer came from the weapons analysis officer.
“Submarine-launched ballistic missiles.”
The room became very quiet.
Darensi looked toward the weapons-control officer.
“Defense sequence.”
“Con Bo Cap ABMs will engage first. L-SAM batteries will engage at extended range. Thoi Do Ca batteries will provide the medium-range layer.”
“And the last layer?”
“High-energy laser systems.”
Darensi nodded.
“Then let’s hope the first three work.”
The tactical display zoomed out.
Multiple ballistic trajectories were now visible across the South China Sea.
Five separate launch areas.
Multiple missiles.
Multiple targets.
That ruled out a conventional cruise-missile attack.
The trajectories were too high and too ballistic.
Hypersonic weapons were unlikely. The measured velocities and flight profiles did not match.
Air launch was impossible.
The launch points were separated by hundreds of kilometers.
That left one possibility.
Ships.
More specifically, submarines.
And if the analysis was correct, ballistic missile submarines.
Darensi stared at the map.
“How many countries can do this?”
“Not many.”
“How many can do it from this position?”
The officer hesitated.
“Even fewer.”
Another warning appeared.

Nobody spoke.

Darensi’s expression hardened.

Five different radar systems were reporting the same contacts, but their measurements were inconsistent.
That was almost as alarming as the missiles themselves.
Bistatic radar confirmed the objects from multiple angles, making conventional stealth ineffective.
Long-range radars operating across different frequencies continued tracking the weapons despite attempts at electronic interference.
The computers were producing independent tracking solutions.
No single sensor could be trusted.
But all of them agreed on one thing.
Something was coming.
“Could it be electronic warfare?” someone asked.
“Negative.”
“Spoofing?”
“Negative.”
“Hacking?”
“Nothing indicates an external intrusion.”
Darensi looked at the screen.
“What about an AI attack?”
The intelligence officer shook his head.
“No evidence of one.”
Darensi watched another missile trajectory appear.
“Then we have a real attack.”
He pressed the communications switch.
“Authorize wartime intercept.”
Across Javnia and Guangzhou, launch crews received the order.

Flames illuminated the darkness around the batteries as missiles climbed vertically before curving toward their assigned targets.

For several minutes, the night sky above the region became a silent mathematical battlefield.
Missile tracking systems continuously recalculated.
Intercept windows narrowed.
Weapons accelerated.
And hundreds of kilometers away, the incoming ballistic missiles continued toward their targets.
The strip-alert aircraft at military bases across Javnia and Guangzhou began launching.
Fighters raced down runways.
Airborne command aircraft lifted off.
TACAMO aircraft departed under emergency procedures.
NAOC aircraft followed.
Naval vessels in port began casting off.
Ships already at sea went immediately to general quarters.
Weapons crews took their stations.
Bulkheads closed.

Across both nations, defense levels rose to their highest wartime footing.
Nobody knew who had launched the attack.
Nobody knew why.
But there was no longer any question that the attack was real.

Power was redirected toward hospitals, military installations, command centers and emergency shelters.
Hospitals switched to emergency power.
Police and emergency services abandoned routine operations.
The cities waited.

The emergency-management network detected a sudden pressure loss at LNG Facility 412.
A moment later, sensors registered an explosion.
The facility shook.
A column of fire rose into the night.
The automated emergency AI immediately isolated the damaged section.
Valves slammed shut.
Pipelines were automatically rerouted around the suspected rupture.
Fire-suppression systems activated.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the primary incident zone.
The first report reached military command less than thirty seconds later.
EXPLOSION — Palembang LNG FACILITY 412.
Darensi read the message.
“Impact?”
“No confirmed missile impact.”
“Then what caused it?”
“We don’t know.”
Another officer stepped forward.
“General, all surrounding surveillance footage is being forwarded to FSB, KISA and military intelligence.”
“Good.”
“Intelligence response team is already en route.”
Darensi looked back toward the missile-tracking display.
The attack was unfolding exactly as predicted.
And yet something was wrong.
One of the analysts pointed toward the map.
“General.”
Darensi turned.
“Look at Palembang.”
A tracking window appeared beside the facility.
There was no confirmed ballistic missile impact.
No debris signature.
No conventional blast pattern consistent with a missile strike.
The explosion had occurred almost exactly when the incoming attack began.
Darensi stared at the display.
“Could be sabotage.”
“Could be.”
“Could be a coincidence.”
“Yes, General.”
Darensi looked again at the hundreds of red tracks crossing the tactical map.
“Find out.”

Within minutes, military intelligence began reconstructing the event.
Every security camera within range of Facility 412 was copied.
Traffic sensors were examined.
Satellite imagery was requested.
Drone footage was pulled from nearby military networks.
Civilian communications were temporarily placed under emergency monitoring authority.
The intelligence response team moved toward Palembang.
Their mission was simple:
Determine whether the explosion was part of the missile attack.
The answer could change everything.
If the LNG facility had been deliberately sabotaged, the ballistic missiles might be only one part of a much larger operation.
And somewhere beneath the South China Sea, the submarines that had launched them were still moving.
The war had begun.
But no one yet knew who had fired the first shot.
