The first people to settle into the sandy dunes between seas did not think of themselves as founders of a nation. They were scattered tribes fleeing famine, storms, and wars from distant coasts long forgotten by history. They traveled in caravans of bone-framed wagons and sailed along the seas in reed ships, carrying little more than oral traditions, hunting spears, and sacred banners stitched from animal hides.
Resourceful groups, each with their own unique trades and abilities for survival, settled in the sandy dunes. They all came from different backgrounds. This was obvious as each group wanted and used the scarce resources for different things. Another thing, however, quickly became apparent; they shared the innate skill to capitalize on any opportunity.
For centuries, the land that would eventually become Dechikely remained divided among dozens of tribes. Many groups spread along the coast for fishing opportunities while some scaled the mountains and laid in valleys to shepherd cattle. Once food became abundant again and populations started to increase, tribes started to find their own unique specializations. Some tribes traded oral story telling in for written words. The groups in the mountains found that there were precious stones thought to be good for trade. Another, more nomadic group, found it easier to carry things in neatly weaved satchels. When word spread of another tribe’s findings, others were enthusiastic to share their treasures for others.
Wealth was measured in livestock, fish, stones, and textiles. Twice per year, the nomadic tribe unknowingly made their way around the future border of Dechikely to pass from one settlement to another. They would gather advancements the other growing groups had and spread them throughout. It made the most sense to them to start in the written text. This was the first step towards unification
The Rise of the Ketian Roads, as they came to be called, brought with it a rise in cooperation. Once written text was established, information was more accurate and records could be kept to predict future needs to and from other tribes. This also formulated a better understanding of exchanges. Eventually, a system was thought to have needed to be implemented for ease of tracking such wealth.
Ultimately, a brilliant tribal engineer named Ket Enelee discovered a vast gemstone deposit beneath the southern mountains. The gem was unlike anything seen before—shined brighter than the sun, easier to cut than diamond, and had an unmistakable blue that made the gem easy to identify and impossible to duplicate. Ket Enelee called it samanite and used the sky on a cloudless day to identify a genuine gemstone. If the gem seemed to disappear when held to the sky, then it was genuine.
While samanite caught the eye of the people, it was practically useless. Unlike other gemstones, it wasn’t the best even for jewelry because it needed constant care and normal wear often led to more repairs than having it was worth. Ket Enelee had the vision to use it as a system of currency for the region. With the help of the nomadic tribe and record keeping, samanite was beginning to be distributed as another form of debt keeping among tribes.
Converting and consolidating debt collecting texts to simply keeping track of a more unified form of “money” eased more burden across the region. This united several tribes by promising wealth and protection. Mining expanded and brought even more useful raw materials into the hands of these tribal people. Primitive road networks along the most traveled routes allowed goods, people, and animals to move across enormous distances in days rather than months.
Trade exploded.
Villages became towns. Towns became industrial cities choked with smoke and glowing furnaces. Merchant guilds emerged to manage trade routes, mining operations, and transportation networks.
These guilds would eventually become the first corporations.
At first, they were simple organizations. The Ember Guild controlled mining extractions. The Pave Pact managed trade routes. The Dech Consortium minted standardized currency accepted across tribal borders.
But wealth creates power faster than armies ever can.
The merchant guilds soon possessed more resources than many tribes combined. They hired private guards. They funded roads, ports, and hospitals. Entire cities depended upon them for employment and food distribution.
When tribal wars threatened trade, the guilds intervened directly. Rather than conquer land militarily, they bought loyalty. A chief who resisted the guilds might suddenly find his people unable to buy grain or tools. A cooperative tribe, meanwhile, received rail connections, modern machinery, and protection contracts. Within fifty years, the ancient tribal system had weakened dramatically.
Not all tribes accepted this transformation peacefully. The final resistance came from the eastern coastal clans of Rhonel, who believed the corporations were destroying sacred traditions. Under the leadership of Senior Aleko, they launched raids against rail lines, mines, and trade cities. The corporations responded with unprecedented force.
For the first time in history, rival guilds united into a single economic alliance known simply as the Core. Together they funded mechanized armies equipped with steam-powered artillery, armored trains, and early repeating rifles.
The conflict that followed became known as the Unification Wars. Traditional tribal warriors fought fiercely, but were overwhelmed by industrial logistics. The Core could replace weapons, transport soldiers rapidly, and maintain supply chains across hundreds of miles. Entire settlements burned. Ancient tribal capitals fell. Thousands died from warfare, famine, and disease. In the final battle at the Ashen Valley, Aleko was captured alive. Rather than execute him publicly, the Core offered him a position on their governing council which he refused.
Legend says his final words were:
“You have not built a nation. You have built a machine.”
He was executed the next morning.
After the wars, the Core faced a difficult problem. They controlled nearly the entire peninsula, but corporations were never designed to govern civilizations. Their leaders understood trade, industry, and logistics—not law, philosophy, or public unity.
Riots broke out in major cities. Former tribes resented corporate rule. Workers protested brutal factory conditions. Criminal syndicates infiltrated supply chains. To stabilize society, the Core drafted the Dechikely Doctrine named after The Dech Consortium. This document became the foundation of the Corporatacracy of Dechikely.
The corporations argued this system eliminated corruption because success depended upon measurable performance. If a corporation failed to provide effective governance, its market value—and political influence—would collapse.
Critics argued citizens had become products rather than people. To stave off more unrest, the Core decided it would be in their best interest to implement an executive position to oversee themselves and be a representation of the people. The person chosen was to be an internal candidate and only referred to as Headman Aleko; named after Senior Aleko who once stood up to the corporations.
Despite ethical concerns, Dechikely entered a golden age unlike anything the country had ever seen. Corporate competition accelerated innovation at astonishing speed. Towering megacities rose above the deserts. Massive vertical farms ended famine. Artificial weather systems reduced droughts. Airships crossed oceans carrying thousands of tons of cargo annually.
The line between government and business vanished completely. Children no longer pledged loyalty to a flag. They pledged loyalty to brands. Over generations, corporate leadership evolved into hereditary dynasties. Families such as the Mituls, Runas, and Katalinas accumulated wealth so vast that they effectively became nobility. Presidents of these corporations lived in massive arcologies away from polluted industrial districts. They traveled in armored aircraft escorted by private security fleets. Meanwhile, ordinary citizens worked under lifelong employment contracts beginning at adolescence. The corporations maintained stability through comfort as much as force. The corporations could continue to do as they pleased so long as the needs of the employed were met
Citizens received:
In exchange, corporations demanded absolute loyalty.
Surveillance systems monitored productivity continuously. Social rankings determined access to opportunities. Workers who underperformed could lose housing privileges, travel permissions, or medical priority. Yet many citizens genuinely supported the system. Infrastructure worked efficiently. Technological advancement never slowed. To millions, the Corporatocracy represented order in a chaotic world.
